Our value of the month at METNS is Character Strengths. We focus on human character strengths that are recognised and appreciated worldwide. We think about our individual strengths and those of our family, friends and people we admire and respect.
What are Character Strengths? We use this definition from the ‘Weaving Well-being’ Programme we are piloting in our school this year.
Character Strengths are the parts of your personality which help you to live a happy and helpful life. Character strengths include optimism, self-control, perspective, emotional intelligence, open-mindedness, curiosity, love of learning, teamwork, bravery, kindness, gratitude, perseverance, humour, forgiveness, zest, creativity, honesty, caution, meaning, love, leadership, humility, appreciation of beauty, fairness.
A value is a principle that guides your thinking and behaviour. How does a focus on Character Strengths do this? Strengths are like treasure. When we know and use our character strengths we can feel better about ourselves, we can get along better with others, we can reach our potential and be the best we can be and we can make the world a better place.
Make it your goal to identify and to recognise your own strengths and to appreciate those of others. Try to imagine what the world would be like if we all used our top strengths every day. Perhaps the beginning of a new year and a fresh start after the winter holidays might be a good time to focus on optimism?
